Thanks to Fred, well over a million people who were blind are able to see. He gave sight to the blind in far away places such as Nepal, Eritrea and Vietnam, but it was his unselfish commitment to the eye health of Australian Aborigines that first made us sit up and take notice. Australian of the Year in 1990.
